Installing a Vantech Urethane Bonded Window: Key Tips
If you're working on a van build and planning to install a Vantech urethane bonded window, there are a few critical steps to ensure a smooth and secure fit. I recently installed one on a 2025 Mid-Roof 148 Ford Transit van, and I wanted to share some insights on the process—especially when it comes to cutting the U molding and handling sheet metal reinforcements.
Marking Your Cut Lines for U Molding
One of the most important parts of the installation is getting your cut lines right before placing the window. A key detail to remember is that the area around the cutout isn’t always perfectly round, so you need to account for this in your measurements.
Leave about ½ inch of space from the edge of your cut line to ensure your U molding fits properly.
The section near the lumped-out area can be tricky, so extra precision is required when measuring and cutting.
Cutting the Reinforcements First
Before cutting through the full sheet metal panel, I always cut out the reinforcements first. This helps prevent potential issues with different cutting methods and tools.
Some cutting tools can create unnecessary stress on the metal, leading to rough edges or misalignment.
By removing the reinforcements first, you can reduce the risk of warping and ensure a cleaner finish when making the final cut.
Tools & Techniques
Depending on the tools you’re using, you might need to adjust your approach. I personally use a mix of cutting methods to get the best results.
Multi-tool or jigsaw – Great for precision cutting.
Air saw or angle grinder – Helps with faster cutting but requires careful handling.
Final Thoughts
Installing a bonded window isn’t just about cutting a hole and dropping it in—it’s about careful planning, measuring, and executing the right steps to avoid issues down the road. Taking the time to mark your cut lines correctly, cut the reinforcements first, and use the right tools will make the installation much smoother.
